Source: MHI – MHI’s recently released Economic Report includes both shipment and production tallies for June 2023. In June, 8179 new manufactured homes were shipped, an increase of 281 homes or 3.6% compared to May 2023, and a decrease of 3,193 homes or 28.1%. Compared to June 2022.
Compared with the same month last year, shipments of both single-section and multi-section homes were both down by 28%. As of 2022, manufactured housing accounted for roughly 11,2% of new single-family starts, up from 9.4% in 2021. As of June 2023, manufactured housing accounted for roughly 9.8% of new single-family starts.
HUD Commits To Advance Affordable Housing Supply, Promote Tenant Protections
Last Thursday, HUD announced new commitments to advance affordable housing supply and tenant protections.
To ease housing supply issues, HUD is making $85 million in competitive grants available “for housing production and preservation and providing public housing authorities and multifamily housing owners in the Rental Assistance Demonstration with new tools to repair and build affordable housing.”
HUD is also taking three actions to promote tenant protections. These include:
- Messaging to public housing authorities and owners of private rental properties to “remind them of best practices.”
- $10 million to support renter education and outreach, and
- A proposed rule to extend the required time for eviction notifications.
MHI has been strongly advocating for the industry on both fronts, emphasizing the role manufactured housing plays in addressing the shortage of attainable housing while also noting the strong consumer protections already in place throughout land-lease communities, especially those receiving Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac loans.
